Not every beautiful floor starts with tiles. Sometimes it starts with solving problems.
This hallway originally had a traditional timber floor. Before a single tile could be laid, the entire surface had to be prepared to create a stable base that would minimise movement and provide the best possible foundation for a long-lasting installation.
For this project I used:
6mm Jackoboard tile backer boards Kerakoll H40 adhesive BAL Ash grout and matching siliconeThe biggest challenge, however, wasn’t the subfloor.
These are genuine Victorian-style individual tiles – every single 95mm tile was laid by hand. No printed sheets. No pre-mounted panels.
With this type of floor, the installation starts long before the adhesive is mixed. The entire pattern has to be carefully planned so the borders remain symmetrical, the central field stays perfectly balanced, and awkward cuts are kept to an absolute minimum.
When everything is finally aligned, the result looks effortless… but that’s usually a sign that a lot of work happened behind the scenes.
Sometimes the best part of a project isn’t just laying tiles – it’s finding the right solution before the first tile is even placed.
